Most electric bicycles have hub drive motors.Hub drive motors are fine if you travel on level terrain. The problem with hub drive motor is when you travel up hills this can cause the motor to overheat and the battery to drain very quickly. If the hill is more than about 3 degrees of incline, hub motors will drain your battery quickly, and could overheat and fail. Hub drive motors do not make use of the gears, so a multi-speed Hub Drive electric bicycle will not make use of the gears in electric mode. All hub drive motors only have one speed/gear ratio.
The gears on a Hub Drive electric bicycle will only function/change when you pedal. A Mid Drive electric bicycle has a motor which is connected directly to the pedal shaft. This allows the gears on the rear axle to be active while in electric mode, so changing the gears or speed will directly change the motor speed/ratio. Most Mid-Drive electric motors are designed for auxiliary climbing only, which means that in order to prevent the motor from overheating, you must limit your hill climbing to less than 3% duty cycle. This means that you must climb only very slight grades, very short distances in electric mode, or you must pedal assist to keep the motor from overheating. Overheating your motor, causes both the motor and the battery to overheat, which will lead to reduced battery capacity, reduced range and premature failure of both the battery and motor.In many cases, climbing hills regularly can lead to instant failure of the battery, motor or both. So while any Mid-Drive motor is better for climbing hills than Hub Drive motors, you need the right Mid-Drive technology for a good hill climbing electric bike.
